Street Rodder Magazine Project Car

Date: April 18, 2011
Author: John Gutheil

Since 1996 Street Rodder magazine has built a project vehicle in conjunction with various industry manufacturers and then Jerry Dixey has driven it to many events around the country logging 20,000+ miles per year with each leg of the tour featured in Street Rodder. This year’s car is a 1955 Chevrolet that is being built by Woody’s Hot Rodz of Indiana. PerTronix Ignition, The Original Doug’s Headers and Patriot Exhaust brands were chosen to compliment the build while offering reliable improvements in power and appearance.

The Road Tour car will feature the New PerTronix Billet Plug n Play billet distributor with Ignitor III electronics that offers the important benefits of an ignition box, without the box. An adjustable digital rev limiter and second spark are two of the ground breaking features that are contained within the distributor. To compliment the distributor, Flame Thrower Plug Wires and the Flame Thrower III coil will also be used.

Due to the unique nature of the Art Morrison GT Chassis and 409 Motor, Don Lindfors, the Manager of the PerTronix Exhaust R&D shop created custom Long Tube headers and Mandrel bent exhaust just for this car. The headers will be added to the already extensive Doug’s Headers line. Complimenting the headers will be a set of the Doug’s Headers Electric Exhaust Cut Outs as well as a pair of Patriot’s Unique VaraFlow sound control mufflers. If you see the Road Tour Car at any of the scheduled tours, be sure to ask the Road Tour crew to demonstrate the unique sound of the VaraFlow mufflers and Open header sounds of the Electric Cut Outs.
